After some thought into the concept of my print information pack I
have made some changes which I hope will make my audience more defined and the
concept stronger.
Originally I wanted to target my pack at a-level students or first
year graphic design students who will be using print. This was not received
very well during my crit, which has meant that I have had to revisit and revise
my concept. I have brainstormed many different options for my info pack and
quite liked the idea of creating a pack for children. The purpose would be to
inform them about how certain things are printed for example the t-shirt they
are wearing. The book would be for the children more than for the parents but
the parents would buy it initially.
After having a discussion with other people from the course I learnt
that a few people were already doing this for their pack. Though it would be
fine for me to produce my book using the same concept and the design would be
completely different I do not want to produce the same pack as someone else.
Going back the drawing board I thought about the target audience I
initially had in mind which were a-level students, I also thought about the
option for children and decided to look somewhere in the middle and produce
something for teenagers who would be between the ages of 14-18. I have decided
to do this because I think that when a person reaches a certain age they start
to become more and more aware about the world around them and have questions
which they want answering. I specifically chose the age 14 because that is the
age when a person would be starting their GCSE’s and 18 because that is when
someone would have finished their a-levels and is thinking abut university.
My book would be on sale in shops such as Waterstones or The Works
within the art and design section. Though I am designing the book to be aimed
at a specific audience I cannot say that there would not be a secondary
audience of people who are older and want to know about the print process. I
don’t think that any book can be made for one audience specifically because it
cannot be said that someone will be given a project where they might need to
look into a book that is not targeted at them. That being said I will be
designing my book to appeal to 14-18 year olds and the language will also
reflect that.
I personally think that people at this age would engage more with
something that is quite humorous in tone but I do not want to create something
that is simply funny. The main aim of my book is to inform and educate someone
about print and the different processes a product has to go through before it
is made public.
I want to create small case studies about items that would
specifically be used by my target audience such as a magazine or canvas bag. I
think that by doing this it will help the audience to relate to the content
much more and therefore engage and learn from it.
