OUGD505: Design Practice 2 - Build A Brand One Day Brief

Today we were set a one day branding brief. We were put into teams and random and each given a business to brand. I was put in a group with Jamie and Kirsty. These are two people that I have not had much contact with so I am very excited to work with them.

The profession we were given was Boiler Maker. None of use knew what this job entailed so we did the first thing we could, google searched it!

We searched Boiler first because this was the word that we all had a contextual knowledge of. The search showed up with the usual brands, British Gas and Valliant. We looked at these brands briefly but didn't want to influence our own ideas by looking at the competition.

Boiler maker search:

We decided to search the term boiler maker and the search came up with a cocktail made up of beer and a shot of whiskey. Though choosing this option would present us with more avenues when it came to design and creativity we wanted to keep challenge of branding quite a boring subject.

Now that we have a good idea about what our business manufactured we set out to coming up with a target audience a name and then a logo.

We brainstormed a series of names that we could have chosen:

WE chose the name Radiate because we felt that it represented what boilers do, they radiate heat. We also wanted something that was not too corporate and could be quite friendly.

We all set out to create some logo ideas and these were mine:

My Logo Ideas:

The logo that we chose was something that we all created. We all looked at the idea of creating a flame in green to showcase the eco-friendly aspect of the business whilst also showcasing the heat from the flame of Radiate. We all agreed on this logo unanimously and I am very happy with it.

Final logo:

Can be in monochrome

As we have to create branding guidelines we came up with examples of logo misuse:

Adding an exclusion zone:

Minimum size:

Creating a brand:

Now that we have the logo we started to pull together some stationary and branding examples:

Final branding guidelines:

I was in charge of the brand guidelines and collecting all of the content. I took the lead with the layout and design because it something I am very interested in.

Evaluation:
Working on the one day brief was an eye-opener it gave me an insight into working in the industry and also into how much work 3 people can create in just one day. I was put in a group of people who I did not usually work with but it worked out really well in the end. I think that timing of the day could have been better thought out due to deadlines etc but I think it was a successful day and the presentations that the groups came up with were very professional.

OUGD505: Design Practice 2 - Crit with Lorraine

____

Today I had a crit with Lorraine on my Oscars research publication. I wanted to show her my design before I sent it to print so that if I had any spelling mistakes or layout issues she could tell me before it was too late.

I found this crit very helpful and noticed a few mistakes with my design which I have managed to change before sending it to print.

OUGD505: Studio Brief 3 - Film Poster (Taking a Closer Look)

____

Looking at the gas station:

One of the most shown sets within this movie is the gas station that Jerry buys in the countryside. I think this could be a great centre piece for my movie poster as I want the enigma to draw people in. I think the gas station is incredibly creepy looking and in turn this will attract the TA.
