OUGD504: Design Production Workshop 1 - Design For Print

As a group we had to reflect on the recent study task and explain, from our findings, what each of the following mean.
  • Format
Our findings:
- CD Insert
- Poster
- Leaflet
- Scale

The way in which something is arranged or set out.
  • Colour
- Monochrome
- Multiple colour
- CMYK
- Laser print

Appropriate to the audience and other contributing/relevant factors within the design.
  • Production
- Book binding
- Packaging
- Cropping
- Constructing

The way the final resolution is made after it has been through the printed process.

  • Processes
- Screen print
- Letterpress
- Lino print
- Mono-print

The chosen method of printing.

  • Finishing
- Foiling
- Embossing
- Binding
- Cropping

Extra/additional process to make the product final.
  • Stock
- Glass
- Paper
- Plastic
- Aluminium

The material the design is applied to.

As we were completing this task we found it very difficult to summarise each of the categories as we felt that they all overlapped. After talking to Phil about these difficulties we came to the conclusion that all of the categories link together in synthesis.

All of these categories have to link together to produce successful design for print.

As a whole group we collectively came up with some summaries for each category:

  • Format
Scale and size and working within that
  • Colour
Colour modes, hues and function etc
  • Production
The actual making of it
  • Process
The method
  • Finishing
= Production + Process
  • Stock
Substrates for printing. (Considerations eg. cost)
