OUGD504: Design Production - Design for Web (Task 5 websites)

We were set a task to find 5 websites which we thought were 'good' design. These were to be based around our chosen subject for the web brief. I found this quite difficult due to the look of some of the websites I found. Because of this I had to base my choices very loosely around the Underground in order to get some design which was more appealing.

The first I found was fare is fair. This I found on Behance and does not appear to be a live site. However I thought it was still relevant and worth looking at because of the design. The different coloured lines and layout are very similar to the tube map and would be a great way to display information and engage with the audience. Though this is similar it is also very different which is great because it is so easy to copy the original Harry Beck design. I have chosen this homepage because of the link to the underground but I have also chosen it because I feel it is good design.

The second website I found was from awwwards.com. The energy trust website for Oregon is very appealing due to the friendly and almost child-like illustrations. I chose it because I think it is an interesting way to display a timeline. I would like to make my website very interactive like this due to the sheer amount of information which I have to say.

London Calling is a branch off the BBC Nordic website, it could be considered to not be a homepage but I think that for the purpose of the task this will be ok. The page explores the different areas of London on a geographical map. Each of the pink circles highlights a different area of London and mirrors the popularity within the size of the circle. I chose this design simply because it had a map of London and looks quite interesting to look around.

For my last two designs I wanted to look at transport themed websites, specifically metro systems. I looked into the Seoul metro system website and found that it was the most interesting design of the many different metro systems. I think that the layout is very simple and minimal as well as the colour scheme. What I have found with many of the metro sites is that they are overpowered with lots of images which aren't needed, this is the site I found with the least imagery. I chose it for this reason as well as the simplicity and relevance to my chosen subject.

The Transport for London is probably the closest website which links to my subject. This is a popular site for tourists and commuters and is visited many times a day. The layout is not particularly interesting but it works very well for the purpose it is meant to serve. I chose this site because of the functionality not the design. I am a fan of form follows function and modernity, I think that good design should be simple and clear which is what this site encompasses.
