OUGD504: Design Production - Design For Print Tone of Voice Development

Now that I have chosen my target audience I have lots of options when it comes to tone of voice. I could make my pack very informative and serious or I could make it interactive and informal. I personally think that new students will engage more with the informal language option but the serious option is definitely worth looking into .

Humorous Tone of voice:

I have chosen some examples of advertising campaigns to illustrate the different tone of voice I could use within my pack. This Colgate advert is one of my favourites as it is so simple and very funny. I also think that many people will be able to relate to it in some way. I want to make my pack very relatable buy making sure I use the correct language and imagery.

This is an example of a more serious message delivered in a humorous way. The message behind this is that it is hard for many people to climb the stairs so please be patient with them. I think that by addressing this problem in this way will change the opinions of people who find it difficult and also other commuters who use the stairs. Humour is sometimes the best way to address a difficult situation.

Serious Tone of Voice:

Information graphics have quite a serious tone of voice though this is dependent on the subject they are giving information about. This info graphic about Strokes is very serious as it is giving facts and figures about a terrible illness. The person who has designed this info graphic has chosen specific visuals to deliver the message and some of these (the skull) convey a message in a very shocking way.

After some quick research into different tones of voice I can use I have decided that the humorous approach would work much more for my target audience. I can make my information pack much more visual and interactive with this option.
