OUGD504: Design Production - Design for Print Primary Research

Primary Research

I came across these info-graphics in the student union. This is a style I like very much because it is so simple and easily recognisable. Though I would like to make my point with just an image it might be quite difficult for me to do this due to my target audience. The aim of my print pack is to inform and educate my target audience about print so they would not be forced to recognise a symbol because they have not been taught about it yet. I do like the idea of image info-graphics because it will allow my target audience to see the image and the name which will hopefully mean that in future they do not need to have the name underneath to understand what it is about.

I took this book out for my web brief but found the cover design was quite a nice design for my print manual. One of my favourite graphic designers, Antony Peters produced some designs for an athletic event and used an effect very similar to this. I really like the overlay effect and think it adds depth to a design. This book about the underground uses typical images which are associated with the tube and overlays them which I think adds a really interesting spin on a very fixed design. I would like to produce something which is a happy medium between my own design ideas and that of the tube.

Before starting the course we were asked to purchase several books and this was one of them. Graphic Design: A users manual is a really interesting book which explains almost everything a person needs to know about Graphic Design. This gives me an idea to produce a manual for print which could be pocket sized and taken into the print room to avoid always needing help. I would have to think about this very carefully because I do not know very much about print and this could become quite a daunting task which I will find very hard to do.

The internal layout is not something I want to use for inspiration because I think it is quite busy and cluttered which does not match my preferred way to design.

Another option I have is to produce a series of mini books about each of the different processes which allows the audience to choose which a specific one which they want to have at one time. A problem I would have with a manual would be that it might be quite heavy and hard to carry to and from university everyday, in that sense this option is much more beneficial but it also has some flaws, each book might be quite hard to keep a hold of, they would be easily lost and this could cause some problems. However, these problems are out weighed by the positives of having several books and the ease they would create. These Cath Kidston books are a perfect size for people to pick up and have in their bags.

A way to combat a hefty manual and a series of books would be to create something like this publication by Liz Earle. By clearly marking each page which allows the audience to choose which method they wish to look further into it overcomes many of the negatives which a large manual would have. I love this design because it is so functional and easy to use which is what I strive for in my creative practice.
