OUGD504: Design Production Workshop 2 - Design For Print

Following on from the study task and the workshop in the morning we had to lay out our 5 examples and categorise them into 4 different groups.

  • Format
Bags

Packaging

Promotion

Business Cards

Publication

After this we were asked to subdivide into further groups:

Bags

- Plastic

- Canvas

- Paper/Card

Packaging

- Food and Drink

- Non Food and Drink

Promotion

- Poster
- Tags
- Flyer
- Leaflet
- Ribbon
- Badge

Business Cards

- Self Promotion
- Business Promotion

Publication

- Entertainment
- Promotion/Information and Advice

  • Colour
- Monochrome

- 2 Colours

- 3+ Colours

- Full Colour

  • Production
- Mass Produce

- Short Run

- Bespoke

Audience size should be taken int consideration when the production is concerned. Packaging for a bespoke company is mass produced but it is not necessarily expensive.
  • Process
- Embossing

- Foiling

- Screen Printing
- Digital

- Impression

- Spot Varnish

- Pad Printing

  • Cost

- Packaging is meant to be thrown away which means that companies would usually want to keep the cost down to a minimum.

After a short break we were asked to separate our things into:
  • Editorial and Publishing

  • Branding and Identity

  • Packaging and Promotion
  • Information and Way Finding

TASK:
What do I not know but I would really like to find out about?
  • How to emboss and deboss
  • Mass production of carrier bags
  • What is pad printing
  • How much bespoke brands spend on packaging and promotional material
  • How is foiling mass produced and what machinery is needed
  • Is screen printing always a cheaper alternative to digital print?
