Progress Crit - Studio Brief 2

Today we had a progress crit for Studio Brief 2. Having just come back to uni after Easter and due to the 503 deadline being on Thursday I did not bring in any finalised designs. This is partly down to the fact that I had recently changed my idea due to originality issues.

I have decided to create an interactive website and mobile application named Oscar Moments and Oscar Moments Live. The website will consist of video and audio recordings of some of the best Oscar moments from the past 86 ceremonies. The mobile app will basically be the website in an App form but it will feature an interactive area which can be used alongside the live ceremony, the idea behind this is to take the experience aspect of my first idea and alter it to fit in with my current idea. I am very happy with my concept and I am ready to start designing the website.

I presented some design boards in the crit and asked 3 questions:

1. Do you think video is the right way to show 'moments' or should images be used? ( images capture the moment in time)

2. Should I used the existing Oscars branding (the logo) or should I design my own version?

3. Should the Oscars Moments live (app) be included to add another level of interactivity with the audience or should i just create the website and show it on a phone aswell?

Feedback :

____

1. Yes videos would definitely show the moments better than pictures! I like the idea of pictures but I think it would be more engaging with the actual videos.

2. Stick with the original branding so that it will still be recognisable.

3. The live app is a really good idea as yes it adds another level of interactivity and also means that if people can not be near a TV they can still get a glimpse of what is going on - maybe allow this to work on a computer as well as through the website.

____

1. Video would show moments more vividly, could have an image based counterpoint?

2. Original branding would show more consistency and be more obviously associated with the Oscars themselves - could have some subtle variations in aesthetic if you want to include own designs more.

3. Keep the App - allows people to keep up wot date if they are unable to watch it - could allow people to make comments/contributions.

____

1. Video with photos as previews?

2. Do your own but use the same aesthetic.

3. If it can be used to further enhance it but not for the sake of it.

____

1. Videos would work better and would make the site more interesting - both could be used, images of fashion would be good.

2. I think you should use the original branding to keeps consistency, also it looks ok! I feel this is something that would be part of the Oscar brand so should look the same.

3. I think the live app is a good idea and should definitely be incorporated in some way.

____

1. Videos would work better becuase its on a website so the visual is all important and images are usually used to substitute moving image when it cant be supplied (i.e print)

2. I think using the logo would be appropriate but they rest of the branding and any other design should be your own but still be aesthetically in line with the Oscars identity.

3. The app is a clever and appropriate addition that makes your project real time and not just an archive so it is always re-usable.

____

1. I think videos over images is more appropriate, maybe you could have a picture beneath on the homepage.

2. Use the existing logo, to ensure it is recognisable, the audience will be fans of the Oscars, they probably wouldn't want it changing, maybe have moments as a separate type, like a sub-logo type.

3. If you just create a website i'm not sure you are covering a really broad range for the brief, as your audience are fans of the Oscars maybe you could make physical products that they could buy. e.g collectable merchandise, or a publication of this years Oscars, and a new one would be released every Oscars.

____

1. Video would be the best way to show moments as its the most appropriate.

2. Use the same logo, as you are designing for the Oscars, add your own type underneath Moments.

3. I think that app would be interesting sometimes when you put a website on the phone they are hard to use. You could add an Oscar quiz? Due to people who are downloading the app would be more interested in the subject anyway.

Evaluation:

The feedback that I received was very positive and I feel that I got the answers I wanted but I also was able to get some feedback about aspects of the design I was not sure about.

The main aspect of the design that I was struggling with was how to incorporate the app into the project. I think that creating the live app moment it does open a door to being something that is used annually by the Oscars viewers. The main reason I came up with this idea was due to research into viewing parties, I was looking into some of the branding for viewing parties and thinking about how to make it work for my practice. I know I want to work with digital design and I think at this moment in time my design has to mirror this. Feedback that was given in the crit agreed with me including the app and I think it will really help me to branch out into something more advanced.

As for a range of different products I have thought about creating the same concept but for other awards ceremonies. Staying with the film theme there are many different ceremonies which carry similar calibre:

- The Golden Globes
- The Baftas
- The MTV Movie Awards
- The National Movie Awards
