OUGD404 : Experimenting with Margins

I digitally drew a variety of different layouts with different margins applied to each. Some of my designs would work professionally but some are perhaps too radical and experimental.

Overall I find this kind of work quite interesting and hope to develop my knowledge in the future.

OUGD406 - Speaking from Experience : Boards

As part of this brief we have to create 3 boards which visually communicate our concept, method of delivery and production.

Concept : Idea and research (primary and secondary)

Method of Delivery : Secondary research

Production : Initial sketches

OUGD404 - Design Principles Feedback Session

During our design principles session today we were asked to get up our work so far into the 10 things brief. Most of the group did not have a sufficient amount of work for people to give feedback on, including myself, I had designed a small leaflet for communication is a virus which I put up on my screen for people to feedback on.

The feedback I received for this DPS was both positive and constructive.

Clean aesthetic
Really innovative use of a bottom margin
Possibly consider utilising the colours on the second page as theres an unbalance

Good DPS
Maybe rise the bottom margin of the image to create more negative space.

Although only 2 people gave me feedback I feel that I have some starting points to improve my work.

OUGD406 - Letterpress Workshop

Today we had the chance to try out Letterpress which I found really interesting. As I have never done this before and I do not particularly enjoy screen printing I thought that I would not enjoy the workshop. As it happened I found it very educational and also useful. When we arrived at the workshop we were asked to write down a statement or few sentences which we wanted to letterpress. I chose my favourite saying 'Everything happens for a reason'.

As we were such a small group this meant we could all choose a different typeface to letterpress. I chose Claredon Bold 30pt.

The fonts are laid out in large draws. Each compartment holds either a letterform, glyph or spacer.

To lay out our phrase we had to place our letters inside a device which enabled us to complete the phrase without each letter moving around. It was interesting to find out how spaces are used in letterpress, each typeface has a selection of thins, thicks, middles, quads and 1,2,3's. These are used to separate words.

The layout of the draw was displayed on a piece of paper which made it a lot easier to navigate.

Once each letterform was in place we then had to pack to rest of the space with thicks and quads. After this we could then slide out our phrase and pack it into a steel frame using furniture and mechanisms to keep the type in place.

When this was done we went over to the press and fixed our steel frame into the machine bed which meant it would be secure. We then had to turn the wheel in order to ink up the letters for printing. We did this by rolling the wheel left to right.

In order to get a clean print we added a few extra pieces of paper as padding. Carefully lining up the paper with the press we secured it with some small handles. When we were happy with the setup we could then feed the paper through the press whilst turning the wheel.

OUGD406 - Communication is a Virus : Extra Promotion Proposals

Though we all decided on which job we would like to do I thought that I should experiment with a few ideas for extra promotional material. As the main aim of this brief is to be noticed I think we could produce a lot more in order to have more ways to be noticed. Though these ideas were not presented at the presentation I plan to submit them with my module. Looking at studios/designers who have produced branding and identity for businesses I noted the most common piece of design they have created whilst also thinking of others which would enable the attention of the audience.
