Research is a process which use to solve a problem.

10 Reasons why research is an important part of Graphic Design:

  • Informs you and helps your understanding of subject matter
  • Inspires you on how to execute ideas
  • Helps you to explore and experience your subject matter
  • Helps you understand your audience 
  • Helps you construct ideas
  • Helps you make decisions 
  • Helps to compare your ideas to a form of feedback
  • Helps you put your ideas into context
  • Helps you develop a style and a professional approach

Identify and explain 10 research methods which we could use to effectively generate source material:
  • Looking up on the internet to find out either facts and statistics about subject matter.
  • Reading books to find out facts, opinions and statistics about subject matter.
  • Reading visual books to find inspiration and compare to other creative practices.
  • Watching a film to gain understanding of an audience and inform your creative style or opinion.
  • Watching TV to gather research about a specific audience
  • Listening to music to gain cultural competence
  • Reading newspapers to find out about the current
  • Reading and collecting written material to create visual research from (graphs, piecharts)
  • Carrying out questionnaires and collecting answers and opinions about subject matter 
  • Carrying out surveys and collecting data about a group of peoples opinions.
  • Learning new skills to develop new styles 
  • Visiting places relevant to subject matter to be inspired by style, cultural experiences etc.
Choose 5 of the above list and elaborate on the source material you would get out of it:

  • Questionnaire and surveys -collect opinions, statistics, facts and personal accounts. Who/how many people are effected by my subject matter, Gaps in the market.

  • Using the internet to improve my knowledge and understanding - visual material, relevant and up-to-date information. Videos.

  • Visiting places relevant to our subject matter - gather a broader understanding and get the atmosphere of the audience you are targeting, who is there? what are they doing? How would you identify your target market?
