OUGD404 - The Anatomy of Type : Part 5

To start this session we recapped over the basic things we had learnt over the past sessions.

The solution to a problem of communication through design.

'Type is speech made visual'
This is common phrase used in Design Principles. As the world progressed type had to be introduced, mass production meant that oral communication was not good enough the introduction of type meant that people would have to become educated (reading and writing.)

The anatomy of type : Part 5

We have to explore the ideology of type as image as well as type on it own. We have to explore the relationship between type and image and how they work together and sometimes cancel each other out. In the past sessions we have been solely focusing on type and the anatomy of type. We have learnt that designing a typeface cannot be done solely on a screen, it must start from a drawing.

We are conditioned to see type and image separately but as Graphic Designers we should see these together.

As a preparatory task we had to bring in the 'a' 'b' 'c' (uppercase and lowercase) from four separate fonts (block, script, roman and gothic)
