OUGD505: Design Practice 2 - Product, Range, Distribution (Foiling)

As the Oscars is such a prestigious event I want my branding to showcase this. I want to experiment with foiling for this brief, this is something I have never done before so it will be a learning experience for me. I have been told that the best way to foil is to use a screen and glue, I do not have the time to expose a screen to foil onto business cards etc. I asked around if anyone knew of a shortcut to foiling, Vicky told me that I could use the heat press in the print room. She said that if I printed my logo onto a piece of paper from the printer in the Graphics room and then took it to the heat press along with a piece of foil, that it would work and come out looking very effective.

I took her advice and gave it a go:

Overall I feel that for a first effort it went quite well, I intend to continue to develop my skills with this process and will hopefully be able come up with a professional outcome.

Contacting commercial printers:

I want the outcome of the branding to look at professional as possible, to do this correctly I think that it would be more time efficient to foil at a commercial printers. I contacted LGP print in Leeds, the printers that I visited for the 504 module, and asked them about their foiling facilities.

Response:

Upon receiving this e-mail I rang LGP to talk to Philip about the foiling. Phil explained that to foil in the way that they usually do it would cost over £50 which is a price I am not willing to pay for a project. He did say that he was having a new machine installed and would let me know if this machine would be able to do what I wanted it to do. He asked me to give him a call after a few days to confirm.

I rang LGP today and unfortunately did not get through to Phil. I left my number for him to ring me back and I am waiting for a reply.

I heard back from Phil who said that the machine should be able to do what I want it to which is great news. I explained the materials that I would need foiling and he said that I should send through the artwork and he would have a go at the foiling.

e-mails between myself and Phil:

I am hopeful that the items will come out looking very professional and I will be able to use LGP's foiling services again in the future.

Foils from LGP:

I am very happy with the final outcomes from LGP and will definitely be using them again in the future.

Costing:

The one aspect of this brief that has put me off is the cost of it all. I spent £40 on foiling with LGP and £10 on the printing aspect. I spent this much to get the finish that I wanted but it would have been much better if I could have done this at a fraction of the price.
