I want to get my publication printed professionally so I have been in contact with Hobs Reprographics and LGP print in Leeds who I visited earlier in the module.
I rang LGP first and I was quoted £117 for my book to be printed and bound. This was just too expensive so I called Hobs and asked them for a quote. They quoted me £80 which was again too much. I asked them why it was so expensive and they explained that each sheet of paper cost 40p per sheet which is why the cost mounted up. I was slightly confused as when I added it up the cost was much less. I ended up sending my PDF document to them and they came back with a better price.
For a perfect bound book it would be £55 and for a saddle stitched book it was £28. I wanted the perfect bound option but felt that it was just too much to pay at that time. It was from this that I had to change my idea slightly to have my book saddle stitched to save on money. All in all this has been a learning curve and I now know a lot about commercial printing and costing. I was tempted to produce the book myself and bind it by hand but I wanted to have some experience within the world of commercial print, especially when my book was focussed on this specific type of print. Overall, I am happy with the end product even though it is quite a thick publication and the binding does leave a slight spring. I hope that this does not affect my overall grade for the project as I would have preferred to more expensive option at the time.
