OUGD405 - How To...

For this brief we had to choose one persons research and elaborate on it with regards to the How To.. brief. We chose Ewan's research on fitness routines. we constructed a survey which we sent out to a set of students for their feedback.

Results...

The findings from our survey showed us that a lot of student exercise and some do not. We were very interested by the money people spend each month. We want to create a free way for students to exercise which can be incorporated into their day-to-day life.

Design related:

We asked this question because we are interested in designing an app to go with our posters.

We are going to display step by step instructions for how to perform each exercise :

Squats :
  1. Stand with your feet facing forward and your chest held out
  2. Place your feet at shoulder width apart and stretch your arms out in front of you
  3. Sit back and down as if you were going to sit on a chair. Keep your knees behind your toes whilst squating and make sure your back is straight.
  4. Lower yourself until you thighs are parallel with the floor and press your weight into your heels.
  5. Keep your body tight and push into your heels to bring yourself back to the first position

Sit ups :
  1. Lie down and have your knees bent and the balls of your feet placed flat on the ground
  2. Place your hands at either side of your head
  3. Tighten your abdominal muscles gently by drawing in your belly button to your spine
  4. Keeping your feet on the ground slowly lift your head followed by your shoulder blades until you are at a 90 degree angle
  5. Hold the position for a second then slowly return to starting position

 Step Ups :
  1. Position yourself standing as tall as possible facing forward in the centre of a step
  2. Lift your left foot off the ground and place it on top of the step
  3. Next lift your right foot and use your muscles to position it on the step above
  4. Carefully place your right foot back on the ground, followed by your left foot
  5. Repeat this process for one minute

Invisible Chair :
  1. Lean your back against the wall, with your feet shoulder width apart, approximately 12 inches from the wall
  2. Slide down the wall until you look like you are sitting on an invisible chair
  3. Your legs should be at a 90 degree angle and your knees should be behind your toes
  4. Hold the position for one minute and repeat when you feel necessary

Push - ups :
  1. Place your toes and hands on the floor making sure that your back and arms are straight. Keep your hands shoulder width apart.
  2. Lower yourself to the floor and stop as your elbows reach a 90 degree bend. Make sure that your body does not touch the floor
  3. Push yourself away from the floor without bending your back
  4. Repeat several times

Choosing a brand name...

As a group we brainstormed lots of different name ideas as well as words which we associated with exercise. Our favourite were NUYU, Activise and Boost. We decided to go with NUYU as our brand name as it fit our concept more than any of the others.

Final design experiment...

To make sure that our idea worked we tried it out on a4 paper in the studio. We found that there were some problems.

OUGD404 - Design Principles : Who are you?

As a preparatory task for this session we were asked to choose either a roman or gothic font with distinct light, regular and bold qualities, and type out the phrase 'who are you?' in four different point sizes.

I chose American Typewriter.

During this session we learnt about type hierarchy and how people read differently when a word is bigger or smaller. We tried lots of variations of the sentence using different point sizes and fonts types.
After doing this we had to vocally say each sentence which proved rather difficult.

As a group we had to listen to someone say the phrase and use out words and type styles to create their phrase.

OUGD405 - Design Process Studio Session

Research is a process which use to solve a problem.

10 Reasons why research is an important part of Graphic Design:

  • Informs you and helps your understanding of subject matter
  • Inspires you on how to execute ideas
  • Helps you to explore and experience your subject matter
  • Helps you understand your audience
  • Helps you construct ideas
  • Helps you make decisions
  • Helps to compare your ideas to a form of feedback
  • Helps you put your ideas into context
  • Helps you develop a style and a professional approach

Identify and explain 10 research methods which we could use to effectively generate source material:
  • Looking up on the internet to find out either facts and statistics about subject matter.
  • Reading books to find out facts, opinions and statistics about subject matter.
  • Reading visual books to find inspiration and compare to other creative practices.
  • Watching a film to gain understanding of an audience and inform your creative style or opinion.
  • Watching TV to gather research about a specific audience
  • Listening to music to gain cultural competence
  • Reading newspapers to find out about the current
  • Reading and collecting written material to create visual research from (graphs, piecharts)
  • Carrying out questionnaires and collecting answers and opinions about subject matter
  • Carrying out surveys and collecting data about a group of peoples opinions.
  • Learning new skills to develop new styles
  • Visiting places relevant to subject matter to be inspired by style, cultural experiences etc.
Choose 5 of the above list and elaborate on the source material you would get out of it:

  • Questionnaire and surveys -collect opinions, statistics, facts and personal accounts. Who/how many people are effected by my subject matter, Gaps in the market.

  • Using the internet to improve my knowledge and understanding - visual material, relevant and up-to-date information. Videos.

  • Visiting places relevant to our subject matter - gather a broader understanding and get the atmosphere of the audience you are targeting, who is there? what are they doing? How would you identify your target market?

Entire Group Research Methods:
  • Visiting events to identify trends, competition and influence
  • Setting up focus groups to gain feedback on on products/concepts
  • Questionnaires too gather facts and figures and opinions
  • Experimenting with different media or production methods
  • Interviewing specialists/professionals
  • Reading design publications /web
  • Photographing peoples behaviour/architecture/documentation
  • Observation of real life
  • Watching a film
  • Collecting current or historical examples
  • Market research into context

THESE ARE METHODS. VERBS NOT NOUNS. A process of doing.

Source material :
  • Quotes
  • Opinions
  • Statements
  • Facts
  • Statistics
  • Feedback
  • Analysis
  • Visual Material
  • Information?*
  • Knowledge
  • Examples
  • Samples
  • Documents
guaranteed to get data from research which could turn into information. Data becomes useful as information.

What stops us or prevents us from effectively researching a project:
  • Time
  • Extensive subject matter
  • Little available information
  • Unavailability to research
  • Unreliable sources
  • Lack of equipment and materials
  • Insufficient funds
  • Interest
  • Client criteria
  • Team work
  • Inaccessibility of info

10 ways in which we can improve our research methods as a group :
  • Look at more written resources
  • Conduct more experiments
  • Visit more places relevant to subject matter
  • Conduct more surveys that are relevant
  • Explore target audiences
  • Take more photographs
  • Interview speciallists
  • Experiment with different media
  • More detailed research
  • More research about target audiences
  • Broaden our research sources
  • Refine subject matter
