We would choose document. A book in InDesign is a very complex series of documents. The document option will work just as well for making a book.
Letter, Legal, Tabloid - American Equivalent
Letter - A4
Click on more options so that we can see all of the options available.
To specify the distance between the columns
Margin guides would enable us to be able to position our content so that we have a white space around out design.
The most important option.
Bleed - to do with the trimming after the layout had been printed.
If I was to design an A5 document and print it at uni I would have to print it on A4. If I created an A4 document that went right to the edges I would have to print on A3 paper. The printing process always involves some trimming. To compensate for any inaccuracies during the trimming process. My image would have to extend/bleed off the page. Adding trim marks it does not matter if during the trimming process if it is not lined up exactly.
Standard bleed amount 3mm
Slug is another area outside our page. It is not as common to use as the bleed option. Slug is an area larger than the bleed area. It is used to display marks (trim marks, text info, CMYK) These are actually printed during the print process but are trimmed off. We can add them when we go to print in InDesign.
Helpful when creating a leaflet (put in fold marks)
What questions do we need to ask to decide whether we need to check the Facing Pages box.
Am I creating a book? Book format.
Black line - Edge of the page is where it will be trimmed to
Purple line - Margin
Red - Bleed guide
If you want to change anything.....
if you want to change the margins and columns...
Using the pages tool allows us to create multiple pages in a document (book) First and last page are always viewed as a single document.
Adding in guides and grids.
InDesign principle, all context has to be contained within a frame.
Text - text frame
Images - Graphic frames
Making decisions about text formatting.
to format the text...
Using the type tool, select text, the options bar at the top of the screen, allows you to change the font, style, size etc.
Importing text...
Select a file, open, it will appear in text box.
if the text does not fit in the box you created, click on the red button at the bottom of the page it will allow me to create a new text box for it to flow into. This allows us to having flowing text over two pages. Another option would be to make the text box bigger.
